Protein Isn’t Just for Shakes

The other morning I was up until 3am picking scrambled egg fragments from my hair. And as strange as it sounds, I would totally do it again. My hair needed protein. Desperately.

I had just gotten back from a family vacation in which I may or may not have paid a little less attention to my hair than deserved. The final straw for me was when I came home, washed my hair, and spent an additional 30 minutes JUST detangling. By the end of the session, I had so much hair in my hands (sorry for the visual) that I couldn’t even touch my hair without strands breaking off.

I have known for weeks that my tresses needed extra TLC. I was convinced that I needed a good cut, or maybe more deep conditioning treatments to correct the issue. But I was wrong.

There is absolutely a such thing as moisture overdose for your hair. Check this article about the importance of having a protein-moisture balance for your hair.

What I did wrong:

1.    I was deep conditioning and baggying over night… a lot.

2.    I was experiencing more breakage than normal.

3.    I eliminated all sources of protein from my hair regimen. Even my greek yogurt treatment that I have grown to love. (more about this later)

After my egg treatment, I immediately noticed a difference in my hair. My shed hairs were little to none. My hair felt stronger. Not tough as in dry, but tough as in it had elasticity and could withstand combing without excessive breakage. I am SOO happy I changed my perception about protein. Yes, I will use it in moderation, but my current sentiments? I’m happy to have it back!

Oh, by the way. I didn’t apply scrambled eggs to my hair. I applied a cracked egg and sat under a hooded dryer for about 30 minutes. Once it was time to rinse, because the water was a tiny but warm… the eggs cooked. LOL!!

There is a product called Diva Smooth that I will be trying this month. It is a blend of all natural oils and honey. According to the directions you let the solution sit on your hair a specified amount of time, wash, blow dry, and flat iron to achieve straight results. Now of course the second you wash your hair there will of course be reversion, but the directions state you simply blow dry and flat iron again to get same the same results. I have read a lot of good reviews and it seems that the main straightening ingredient could be the honey and blow dry combo. After I try it I will come back and update. BTW I love this blog and your daughter is a cutie pie 🙂

Hi Love! I need to read up on this, I love the concept– especially if reversion of your curls is promised. I’m refraining from the straight styles that require heat for some time, but I’m definitely curious to see how this product holds up with styling and hair health. Thank you for putting me on to it. Thank you for your sweet words about my little J and I hope to see you back on the blog some time soon! <3
