(First Impression) Product Review: Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair

You know I keep it real right? I feel it is my obligation to portray both my good experiences and not so good experiences in my healthy hair journey. Sadly, today I have to lay to rest– the hope I have had for Cantu Shea Butter products for my natural hair.

cantu shea butter for natural hair, natural hair, shine and define curl custard, curl activator cream, natural hair, healthy hair, the little in jen that could

The Cantu moisturizing curl activator cream was a bit drying for my hair. I applied it to my hair dry (in its truest state, a wash and go) and although it was soft to the touch upon initial application, it started to feel drying as the product dried in my hair.  When I applied it to J’s hair (wet), I wasn’t impressed with the beginning, middle, or end of the application. It actually felt sticky.

The custard, I must admit, I wanted to LOVE. I opened the jar and immediately fell in love with its fruity, candy like scent. Unfortunately, the shine and define custard did not love me back. Once it dried, it left my hair rock hard, and as I manipulated my hair, it started to snow. Rain. Downpour.  Yes friends, this product flaked in my hair. It brought me back to many moons ago, my first time going natural, when I tried the cantu leave in repair cream that everyone was raving about. The product flaked, didn’t play well with others, and was so drying on my curls. My poor curls.

It makes me wonder if I should take a product fail as a sign that I should abandon a brand all together or try and try again. Do you believe in second chances for brands with different products or lines? Help a girl out!
