Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils is Here to Stay! (Review)

This past weekend I was invited as a guest of Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils to attend the Hair She Grows Natural Beauty Event in Maitland. (It was such a beautiful event!) J and I both went home with samples from the Aunt Jackie’s, but the fun didn’t end there. As a guest, I gained access to the VIP lounge where I was also invited to take home a product of my choice. After much deliberating– they all looked so yummy– I chose the “Quench” Moisture Intensive Leave in Conditioner. I couldn’t wait to dive into these goodies!

Styling Routine.

We used products from other brands to deep condition, wash, and condition J’s hair  (in that order; details coming soon)  because we were only gifted samples of a detangler and styler from the Girls line to try. I read the directions of the detangler only AFTER washing her hair, and noticed that it serves a purpose of strictly detangling, then would need to be washed out. Since we detangled her hair prior to washing I skipped this step and went straight to styling. I opted to use the “Quench”leave in conditioner (which isn’t from the kids line) which felt like magic in a bottle when I applied it to her hair. (More about that below.) To set her hair and install her twists, I used a product from Aunt Jackie’s Girls line called Baby Girl Curls, Moisture Rich Curling and Twisting Custard. This was my first time using something so lightweight as a styling product for her hair, and I have no idea why because her curls loved it.

Review: The Good. The Bad. The Truth.

Both products smell great– like a candy or fruity drink.  Definitely something sweet.

The first thing that I noticed about the custard is that it’s much lighter and thinner than most products I’ve seen marketed as a custard. For me this was a nice surprise because thicker custards can get tacky and sticky quickly, or just sit on top of your hair.

The custard definitely helped with defining her curls a bit more and helping them clump together as I smoothed it in. It did get a tiny bit sticky as her hair dried in certain areas, but that changed as soon as I applied more water and twisted her hair down. As her hair dried I couldn’t stop admiring how light it looked. I know it sounds crazy. But I could see the true color and texture of her hair, and I know it’s because it wasn’t weighed down. The next day her hair looked like it needed more moisture but when I took her twists out, it was SO SOFT! Easy to detangle and separate the twists, lightweight, and SOFT. I applied our favorite cream styler for more moisture and hold, and styled her hair in a high puff. I’m still admiring her curls as I type.

If I could do anything differently, I probably would have applied a tiny bit of moisturizer or cream styler to keep her hair happy and moist, or I would try each product separate to see how well one does without the other.

I really think the star player in this lineup was the leave in conditioner “Quench”. Also a bit lighter than the leave in’s I’m used to, this formula was the consistency of a thick soup. Well, probably a bit thicker than that but I’m having the hardest time thinking of comparing it to something with a similar consistency. You’ll definitely want to take your time applying it or you’ll have glops on your floor and bathroom counter like I did. My advice is to take your time working it in–rake, smooth, whatever– and start with a small amount and build so it’s easier to control. To be honest, once I noticed how beautifully our hair drank it up and plumped to satisfaction, I didn’t mind it it’s runny consistency. As it grew on me, I started to wonder why I hadn’t been seeking products of this texture all along, because we all know how easy it is to run into product buildup with low porosity hair.

That Quench is flirting with me. I was so in love with how soft (yet defined) her curls were that I did a test run with it myself, and I’m loving how soft and moisturized yet DEFINED my hair is. Granted, I didn’t run through my full wash day routine, but I applied it to my wet hair (in sections) and allowed it to air dry. My curls are lush and happy!! I’m so happy with my choice.

I’m so interested in trying more products from Aunt Jackie’s, they definitely set the bar pretty high. Not to mention the fact that they are mineral oil, sulfate and paraben free with impressive ingredients. I checked the prices and availability of some of their products (most of which are under $10) and I’m floored. All this goodness for these prices? Let me slide over to the Aunt Jackie side real quick!

I know this was a long one but I had to go in because I’m impressed! If you read through this entire review, thank you. You’re the real MVP.

What products from this line should I try next?

I did not mention this in the video, but I do alternate styling products for my daughter’s hair. To avoid product buildup, I choose light products and I apply sparingly. Check out our staples list to…
